Understanding Neutral Disinfectant Cleaners and How They Work

How Does a Disinfectant Work?

Disinfectants are antimicrobial agents that are applied to the surface of non-living objects to destroy microorganisms that are living on the objects. In a nutshell,  they work by destroying the cell wall of microbes or interfering with the metabolism.

Not only are there differences in the action of the antimicrobial ingredients, but there are also differences depending on the concentration of chemical that is used that can impact the action of a chemical agent or physical process.

In general, disinfectants have three mechanisms of action or ways that they affect or kill an organism: Cross-linking, coagulating, clumping; structure and function disruption; and oxidizing. This is according to an article found in Cleaning & Maintenance Management.

The article goes on to say,

Quaternary ammonium compounds work by denaturing the proteins of the bacterial or fungal cell, affecting the metabolic reactions of the cell and causing vital substances to leak out of the cell, causing death.

Being a "neutral" disinfectant, it is safe to use on finished surfaces on your floors without harming the finish. The Hillyard Re-Juv-Nal is a product that will work in lots of applications. It can also be used in food service areas on counters, table tops and other such surfaces. It is not to be used on eating utensils, glasses or dishes.

As with any disinfectant or cleaner, you should follow the directions according to the label.
